Classroom Guidance

Classroom guidance lessons are presented to all students at North Todd Elementary. The goal of these lessons is academic achievement and success for all students. The lessons encompass academic, college and career readiness, and social/emotional content. The lessons are based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards, Kentucky Common Core Content and Indicators for the School Counseling Program. Lessons occur monthly as part of the specials rotation.

School Counseling Framework Model

 Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is a component of the comprehensive school counseling program. Individual counseling provides supports for students, during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change, or other situations impeding student success. It is appropriate for this type of counseling to be short-term. Counseling can help students identify problems, causes, alternative and possible consequences so they can develop appropriate coping skills to take responsible action. Counseling is offered throughout the school year to students in a confidential setting. Parents/guardians, teachers, or other school personnel may refer a student for counseling. Counseling is not recorded in a child's cumulative folder as what they share during a counseling session is confidential. However, if the child appears to be in imminent danger, it is the counselor's responsibility to report to the proper authorities.

Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling is one of the direct services available as part of the comprehensive school counseling program. Small group counseling is available to students in grades K-5. Friendship and/or social skills groups are offered at all grade levels. Other group topics include study skills (attention and organization), handling difficult emotions (anxiety/grief/anger/stress), impulse control, grief/loss and changing families. Counseling is offered in a small group for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, or normal developmental tasks. Depending on the topic, a variety of techniques and materials are used, including books, short videos, art materials, role play, games, and suggestions for practice between sessions. Written parental permission is obtained for group counseling.
